High Trek's Navigation courses are structured with two goals in
mind. We want you to go home feeling that you've not only mastered the
mysteries of mountain navigation but you've also had a splendid hill-walking
break.

Theory and Practice
|
Apart from a couple of hours' theory at the start, the whole course
will be conducted out on the hills. Over the three days we'll cover most
aspects of map reading (scales, symbols and contour lines) as well as route
planning and route finding.
We'll teach you how to use your compass and romer and give you plenty
of practise at taking bearings, estimating distances and other tricks of
the trade.
We provide GPS units, or you are welcome to bring your own GPS along, as their use will be
covered, together with how they fit in with today's navigation. |
Night Navigation
We'll also offer the option of a night navigation exercise to let you practise
your new found skills. But we never forget it's your holiday too
and there'll be plenty of time to take photographs, enjoy the spectacular
views or simply to relish the fresh air and freedom of the mountains.
|
National Navigation Award
If you wish a more formal recognition of your achievement we are an approved
centre for training and assessment of all levels of this award and offer
the option of staying on for an extra day and night to be assessed at an
appropriate level
for the British Orienteering Federation/Recta National
Navigation Award. Successful candidates will be awarded either the Bronze
Silver or Gold badge and certificate.
