Summit Café closed for rest of the year

5/9/06

Snowdon demolitionDemolition work has started on the building on the summit to clear a space for the spanking new building that is due and therefore the café is closed for the rest of the year. Trains meanwhile will terminate at Clogwyn station at 2500 feet above sea level where temporary toilet facilities will be available.

The New Summit Building
Public consultation on the original plans produced the following worries and resultant changes.
bullet Reflections from large windows - non-reflective glass will be used and will be positioned in such a way which will have a less reflective impact.
bullet Litter problem due to external serving hatch - External serving hatch is now being omitted from the scheme.
bullet Concern over roof detail - Harshness of the roof line will be softened and the surface will be scabbled. The colour of the stone will be close to the greyness of the sky. Also greater emphasis will be given to the curvature of the roof to help it blend in with the stone walls at each end.
bullet Acoustic and emissions from the generators will be of concern -The use of power will be reduced by implementing sustainable principles within the building design consequently putting less demand on the generator. The generator will still be used but positions as far away as possible from the building users.
bullet Lack of winter refuge - Following detailed consultation with relevant organisations, it was suggested that including winter refuge within the design would encourage people in trouble to take a step to far by pushing on to the summit. The BMC and Local Mountain Rescue Teams have advised that a shelter would cause problems in this situation.
bullet No need for a shop - This option should be available, but items for sale should be 'appropriate and locally sourced'.
bulletThere is a need for an Environmental Impact Assessment
This work is currently being undertaken by FPCR, and was always going to form part of the planning process.
bulletBuilding should be smaller - The first floor will be removed and the ground floor remains on the footprint.
